Bio
Ellen Smead was born in rural east Tennessee and grew up in central Arkansas and Tennessee. She earned her undergraduate degree in International Studies at Rhodes College in Memphis.
Following graduation, she entered the United States Peace Corps and served in the West African country of Benin. She completed her service and returned to the US to live in Washington, DC and work in public health. Her areas of work were maternal and child health and routine immunization promotion; this work with and for women, children, and families sparked her passion for midwifery.
As a midwife, Ellen is passionate about the full spectrum of prenatal care, labor and birth, and the postpartum transition. Not only does she enjoy working with pregnant people specifically during the childbearing period, she also strives to provide comprehensive healthcare throughout the reproductive years and beyond.
During her time off, Ellen loves to spend time with her college-age daughter, her husband, Mike, their two kids currently at home, and their two dogs, Sandie and Pi. The outdoors, reading books (hard copy!), and yoga are all highlights to the weekends off!
